If you guys need to set up a dedicated URL and need help with hosting and a fresh phpbb install to work with, just as I've done on my board. Let me know, it's not that hard to do and you aren't stuck with ads being forced down your throat since you own it lock stock and barrel and it's not being hosted remotely. I'm letting you know now before you build up a huge database.

Well, to begin

Postby Saucerguy on Tue Mar 25, 2008 10:31 pm

I use Godaddy for my registrar, it's the best rate at only 9.00 a year for the domain name, I have a couple of dedicated boxes that allow me to add more URL's onto it, so I can handle that end for the hosting element for you. There is a link to the phpbb http://www.phpbb.com/ this is the source code that runs this, and the other board. What you do in cpanel is set up a database, and a username and password, once the source files are uploaded, you open up the installer script and fill in the proper variables, it then installs and configures itself to become a functioning board. You can then start to modify it's layout and create your new threads/sections. I'm mentioning this now since you are building your database here, and I don't think they let you back up and move them over to other server's, the database is the most important thing on the boards, since that's all of the content and account information you are currently building up. The larger the database, the longer it takes to move it, so getting a mainstream, something dedicated to what you are creating and being in full control over from the beginning is a much better way then building up this current one, which in turn, is only making money for someone's ad by google campaign, heck, if you want to, you can add your own google ads so you can profit from it. On mine, I haven't placed any in them, I don't feel it's necessary and I want people to not feel like I'm trying to sell them something.

Saucerguy, let me get this straight are you hosting your own board locally or through another company online? See to me when you say that you have a couple of dedicated boxes sounds like you host your board locally and have a static ip that you registered to a domain name. am I right in thinking that or did I get lost somewhere? If thats the case I totally agree with you because sooner or later the database will grow out of hand. But we would need to run this by the club members to see if they would like to invest in this or not. Granted its not a whole lot but I think that this should be a shared expense and not only Buckshot doing all of the funding.

I have two accounts at two different datacenters. These are the places that formally house the boxes, this includes the pipe to deliver the content. On one of them, it's a Plesk based Linux server, I'm not using that one for online forums though because it's too much of a hassle to integrate and transport the databases with. The other one is cpanel based, which makes it much easier to integrate in that area since I am more familiar with that type of interface. Neither are physically here, I looked into doing something like that a long time ago and it simply was not cost effective. The main box with the plesk interface I pay 20.00 a month for, the other one I pay 10.00 a month on, so yeah, I do shell out money regularly to keep my board afloat, the same with the domain name registration and luckily, I'm the guy doing all of the IT stuff so no need to outsource that element. Once installed, you guys are going to have to get up to speed upon reconfiguring it, with it's layout and features, for the stock interface is vast, and highly suspect they have a dumbed down version on this one since it is template based.

If you guys do decide to host with me, let me know what you can afford, I'm flexible and have been hosting other people's web sites for years, these last two boxes have proven themselves quite well, and believe me, I've gone through quite a few hosting companies in the past so have rather high standards.

I hear you on having to cover all of the expenses yourself, I recently added a donation thread for that purpose, it's not free to do these when done in that manner, but it's great that I am not at the mercy of the providor's wims, ie. the ads by google, some of them leave a great deal to be desired content wise which reflects negatively on your board. That, and since there is less interference, the search engines find mine easier to spider in, which means natural search engine ranking and listings.

I'll get the source code uploaded and will install it for you, pro bono, if you opt to host with me, I can even give you some admin priveledges at my board so you can see what you are getting into along the back end.
