Engine mounting angle?

Postby annihilate on Tue Apr 08, 2008 1:46 pm

I'm new to RC airplanes and am in the progress of my first build. My wife bought me a 66" wingspan ARF trainer along with a .46 OS engine. The trainer is generic and came with no instructions, so needless to say I've had quite a few trips to the LHS.

The problem I am having is the engine is narrower than the pre-built mount on the firewall. I picked up a new mount, but I need to cut a block of wood to space it out from the firewall and give it the proper angle. I took measurements of the current mount and transferred them to my block of wood. Now I know the left to right angle. What I can't tell is if the engine is suppose to point down or be level with the fuselage. Is the engines crankshaft normally parallel with the center line of the fuselage or not? Or is the left to right angle the only important one?

Also, how much deflection do I want in my control surfaces? +/- 1/4 inch?

If all goes well I should be seeing some of you at EAM's field soon. Thanks for the input.

You want the thrust angle Down and to the right. It's different with each configuration. I've put washers under one corner of a motor mount to get it right. Look at a similar trainer, and try to match it. That should get you started. If once you get it in the air and trim it out, you have a ton of rudder or elevator in it to keep it straight, you might have to adjust your thrust.

YUP,
SAW THIS PLANE AT HC....
YOU MAY HAVE A BOAT THERE...

DEFINITION :BOAT=A HOLE IN THE WATER YOU THROW MONEY IN

FIND OUT THE DOWN THRUST ANGLE OF ANY .40 SIZE TRAINER & IMPLEMENT IT ....PROBABLE 1 DEGREE

OR GET AN ARF HIGH WING TRAINER FOR ABOUT $70.00

SURFACES...DEPENDS...DOES TX HAVE DUAL RATES ?

Im running a DX7 so dual rates are no problem.

Any thoughts on elevator, rudder, aileron deflection? Not sure what to set my servo endpoints at.
